As an artist and fifth generation Californian, growing up in the Bay Area and living and working in Sacramento and the Monterey Bay area, Laurie Winthers is particularly drawn to California's open spaces.  Her paintings portray sweeping views of uninterrupted land and sky, places where our food is grown, where animals graze, where water naturally stands.  Her works are generally devoid of people, buildings and animals, reflecting the artist's keen interest in preserving the nature of the open spaces in which she grew up.  Capturing a quality of light in the landscape, combined with the use of a bold color pallet, Laurie Winthers' paintings powerfully suggest the beauty and solitude to be found in both space and quiet.  The shimmering light and color in her work, along with the furrows and folds of the land, engender a stunning perspective.
